Standard Operating Procedure (SOP): Alternate Travel Plan
1. Objective
To provide users with a clear and streamlined process for availing Alternate Travel Plan benefit, ensuring they either receive a confirmed train ticket or a refund (up to 3X) if the ticket remains waitlisted at the time of chart preparation.
2. Scope
This SOP applies to all users booking train tickets under the Alternate Travel Plan feature. It includes eligibility criteria, booking process, refund claims, coupon usage, and key terms.
3. Definitions
- Chart Preparation: Final list of confirmed train passengers prepared by Indian Railways, typically 8 hours before departure.
- Alternate Travel Plan: feature offering refund compensation (up to 3X) if the ticket remains waitlisted.
- Alternate Travel Plan Coupon: A refund coupon (part of the total refund) that can be used for future bookings within a specified timeframe.
4. Process Overview
4.1 Booking with Alternate Travel Plan
1. Select a waitlisted train displaying the Alternate Travel Plan tag.
2. Opt-in by clicking 'Yes, I want Alternate Travel Plan'.
3. Proceed with payment, including the applicable Alternate Travel Plan charge.
4.2 Eligibility for Refund
Refund under Alternate Travel Plan is applicable only if:
- The ticket remains fully waitlisted at the time of chart preparation.
- Booking was made under eligible train/class.
- Passenger has not cancelled the booking.
Not Eligible If:
- Ticket is RAC or partially confirmed.
- User cancels the ticket (before or after chart preparation).
- IRCTC confirms at least one passenger in a multi-passenger booking.
- Cancellation occurs before chart prep or by user post-confirmation.
4.3 Refund Structure
Based on Selected Travel Mode:

Example:
For a ticket fare of ₹2000 and travel mode as flight:
- ₹2000 to original payment mode
- ₹4000 as Alternate Travel Plan Coupon
Total Refund = ₹6000
Note: Max coupon value = ₹6000.
5. Claiming the Refund
Steps to Claim:
1. Visit your trip details page post chart preparation.
2. If the ticket is not confirmed, select your preferred travel mode.
3. A coupon code will be:
- Shown on-screen
- Sent via email and WhatsApp
4. Apply the coupon code during your next booking.
6. Alternate Travel Plan Coupon Usage
Key Terms:
- Single Use: Only one booking allowed per coupon.
- Validity: 7 days from chart preparation.
- Travel Date Condition: New travel must also be within 7 days.
- Applicable Modes: Train, Bus, Flight (as selected during claim).
- Account Restriction: Coupon must be used from the same account.
Example Scenarios:
- Booking amount < coupon: Difference lapses.
- Booking amount > coupon: User pays the balance.
7. Exceptions and Cancellations
- User cancellation → Refund per IRCTC policy, no Alternate Travel Plan refund.
- Train cancellation by IRCTC → Full fare + Alternate Travel Plan fee refunded.
- Coupon-based bookings cancelled by operator → Coupon and TG fee refunded.
- Coupon-based bookings cancelled by user → Coupon lapses, no refund.
8. Terms and Conditions Summary
- Applicable only for eligible trains/classes .
- Paid, opt-in feature—cannot be combined with Assured or Assured Flex.
- Max 3 bookings per month under Alternate Travel Plan.
- Passenger names and count must match original booking.
- Non-transferable and non-combinable with other offers.
- reserves rights to deny/refuse claims in case of misuse.
